Week 8: This is my last week with Monkey Magazine! :( This last week I am trying to reach my goal of doubling the fans on the Monkey Myspace, as well as increase fans on the Facebook page and Twitter. I have been really focusing on Twitter the last two weeks as well as looking into TweetDeck, which is a way to look at all of your account posts, friends' posts, posts involving yours, and facebook. I think it's an easier way to use Twitter. Also I have been twittering ivery few hours to insure that our readers kept checking us out for the latest news and issues from Monkey! We also got my interview with Rhys Darby back and it should be in one of the upcoming issues! It turned out really great! Unfortunately the end of the week came which meant I had finished my internship at Dennis. It's safe to say I wasn't ready to go and I had a fantastic summer working with the boys at Monkey. Thank you guys for everything and I already miss going into work!
Week 7: We are still waiting for the footage from the festival, it's taking a long time to get to us. But I can't worry too much about it because I was just told that I would be interviewing Rhys Darby. He is the manager in Flight of the Conchords as well as Jim Carry's boss in Yes Man. He was in London promoting the second season of Flight of the Conchords as well as his new comedy show. I had a 15 minute interview slot and about 15 questions. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was a very laid back interview. I interviewed him in the theatre where he was performing his comedy show so I ended up sitting a few chairs away from him and the camera was strictly on him. I would ask him questions and he gave the funniest, sometimes the most ridiculous answers! I was told not to laugh because the camera microphone was right by me but at times it was really hard! When I got back from the interview, the footage finally came from the festival. Unfortunately because the weather was so bad the camera and the sound got all washed out. So we ended up not being able to use the footage. But luckily my interview with Rhys Darby turned out!
week 6: This weekend as part of the program we are going to Paris! We left on friday morning by train. We took the chunnel, which is a long tunnel that connects England and France by going under the English Channel. Once we got there we started sightseeing. On the first day we saw the Moulin Rouge, got dinner on Avenue des Champs Elysees (which is one of the most famous streets in Paris), and the eiffel tower at night all lit up! The next day was a very busy day because it was the onlyfull day we had in Paris. We went and saw the Louvre, which we could have easily spent the entire day in, and saw the Mona Lisa, the inverted pyramid and Pharaonic Egypt. After that we saw some more sights and found out that the Tour de France was finishing in Paris the next day so we went and got to see the final run and the finish line. The last day we were there we went to the Notre Dame. We were able to go to the top of the church to take pictures of all of Paris. It was fantastic! After we were done at the Notre Dame we had to rush back to the train station to catch our train. Overall I liked Paris but I was definitely ready to go back to London!
week 6: At the beginning of the week, I was waiting on the footage from the festival so I could watch my interview and so the guys could edit it and get it ready for the magazine. We were finally contacted by the PR firm that had the footage and they told us it wouldn't be ready until the following week. So for the rest of the week I continued working on the social networks and increasing readers online.

Week 5:
Ok so I went to the Wakestock Festival this weekend and it was an experience! First of all, when we got there the forecast was rain all day with heavy rain and wind at night. All I brought for shoes were flip-flops! Luckily the rain held off for the first hour or so, so the guys at the magazine gave me a Flip camera to go around and interview people at the festival. This was my favorite part. Going up to people and just start talking to them! And the questions that I had were a hit. I decided to try them out on random people before asking the bands. Once the rain started, we pretty much stayed on the stage which, thankfully, was covered. After Fightstar finished their performance, which was all acoustic, I was able to conduct my interview. Of course I was nervous but it went really well, I just hope the rain wasn't too loud in the background that you can not hear the interview! After that I was able to interview another band, The Haunts. This one wasn't on camera but the guys were really sweet and they were still excited to be there even though the conditions weren't ideal. By the end of the night, my feet were caked in mud, my clothes were soaked but I still had a great time! The camera man said it should be about a week before I get the footage. I can't wait!

This week's planned tour was the City of London tour. Here we basically walked around central London and got to see all of the sights and learn the history behind them. We saw Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, etc. While I have already seen all of these sights the last time I was in England two years ago, I did not learn any history behind them. For example, Buckingham Palace is famous for the home of the Queen but she is only there on Tuesdays and for any major public function. Otherwise she considers Windsor Castle, just outside London, her home and she spends the majority of her time there. And as many times as I have seen and visited these sights, they never get old. I still enjoy them just as much as I did two years ago.

This week's planned day trip was to Bath and Stonehenge. We took a coach bus to Stonehenge first. We didn't stay here long, just long enough for everyone to take their pictures! Next we went to Bath. While we were there we got to take a tour of the Roman Baths, as well as explore the city on our own. I took a city tour and found out where Jane Austin lived, a lot of history about how Bath used to be the 'posh' place for people to travel in England. Bath is out in the English countryside so everything was at a much slower pace unlike fast-paced London. After the tour we did some shopping before heading back to London. It is crazy to see how different the cities are from each other even they are only a few hours apart. Bath and Stonehenge are a complete 180 from London.

I have also been busy keeping up with the online networks. Since the magazine is a weekly magazine, every wednesday I usually spend to entire day updating the sites so that the new material is on there and the previous weeks is archived. I have also increased their fan base by at least 500. My goal is to double the number of fans they had when I started my internship. There was also a presentation that was given on how to increase marketing online and how to benefit from it!

Along with my internship, the University of Dreams also sets up activities around London for all of us to do, so we can get a chance to experience all of the city. This week they set up a tour of Shakespeare's globe theatre, followed by ticketes to one of his plays, As you like it, that was currently playing at the theatre. I found it extremely interesting because the theatre was built almost identical to the original, thatched roof and all. The day we went on our tour it was supposed to be raining, which in London is obviously very typical. Our tickets for the play were standing tickets so not only did we stand for the three and a half hour play, but if it would have rained we would have gotten extemely wet! (The theatre is completely open, except for the small roof that covers the stage.) Luckily the rain held off until later that night, and the play was excellent! If anyone has not read As you like it, I definately recommend checking it out!
During my second week at my internship, I was still working on their social networking sites making sure they stayed updated. But I also started working on certain parts of the magazine. For example, there is a section called top gear in the magazine and each week we feature five different products (new gadgets, clothing, etc...) that have recently come out onto the market. We are sent samples of them and we write a review on them for the magazine. This week I was actually in charge of researching, contacting, and writing the reviews for the products. Since I am working for a magazine who's readers are mainly males, I had to find products that would appeal to that demographic. I was able to get samples of: a Sony Rolly, TomTom sat navigator, the Mongoose cricket bat, a pair of 'trousers', a few tee-shirts and a jacket. So far I have written reviews on both the TomTom and Sony Rolly. The reviews were also a little tricky because I had to write in a way that would appeal to men, which was obviously a little difficult for me! I know I summed up my week in only a few sentences but it took me nearly all week to get in contact with people and get them to send samples of their products over to me! My reviews should be in one of the upcoming issues and when they are I'll put them here on my blog!

My first week as an intern at Dennis Publishing:
When I first arrived at my internship on day 1, I was extremely nervous but my immediate supervisor, Eoin, was extemely friendly and introduced me to the rest of my co-workers. The first few days were spent learning the ropes at Dennis and how I would contribute to my team. Since Dennis is starting to focus more on digital magazines rather than print, one of my main tasks is to increase readership through different social networks, the main ones being facebook, myspace and twitter. Some of the magazines, such as Monkey Magazine, is generally focused on the younger generations between 20-35, so being able to market and compete in these social networks is key. Also when I looked at their different accounts on these networks, I could tell they had not been updated for quite a while. So for the first week I spent the majority of my time updating their accounts and working on marketing the magazine through these social networking sites.

Intro and University of Dreams!
Hi everyone!! My name is Danielle and I am currently doing a marketing internship for Dennis Publishing over in London, England! Before I start talking about my internship, I just wanted to tell you all a little bit about myself and how I found this amazing internship!
I'll be starting my fifth year this fall at UWEC and I am majoring in Business Administration with a minor in International Business. A few years ago I studied abroad in Winchester, England and ever since then I knew I wanted to come back and when I found out that I could do an international internship for my minor, I jumped at the chance to do my internship back in England. That's where the University of Dreams came in.
I was really struggling trying to find a internship in London on my own so when I heard about the University of Dreams I decided to check it out. At first glance it may not interest you but I definitely recommend looking into the University of Dreams, ESPECIALLY if you want to do an international internship. There is one big lump sum that may seem like a lot at first but when you take into consideration that they take care of all your housing and basic living expenses, it is definitely worth it! For example, my housing, work visa (approx. $1000), food and transportation around London is all paid for by the UofD. (just for travel in London, it would have cost me more than $200 a month if I would have paid for it myself!) But most importantly, they offer 99% internship placement, and their internships are good, quality internships with very reputable companies. They offer internships in almost every field from finance to fashion to marketing. I now see what everyone means when they say how great internships are for learning purposes. I have been interning at Dennis for a week now and I have already learned so much but I'll save that for my next blog!
UofD also gives its students a chance to go around and explore their internship cities (or in my case, country!) in the form of weekend activities. Here in London we have a bus tour, day trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Brighton, dinner cruise down the Thames, and a weekend trip to Paris, all which are already paid for in the lump sum I talked about earlier.
So as you can tell I have nothing but great things to say about the UofD because without them there is a very good chance I would not be where I am right now!
